My Freaking Knees!!

On Friday I headed back to the running store I frequent. As you may recall, I have been experiencing some knee pain over the past few weeks which just happens to be about the same time I purchased my Mizuno Wave Riders. So here is the thing…. I can run 36 miles of trails in my trail shoes and have no knee pain. Put me on the road and at about 2 miles the burning sets in. It feels like the front of my knee caps are on fire and just burns so bad. Well the store was awesome and gave me another pair of shoes to test out. Saturday afternoon I headed out for a 7 miler and just as I feared the pain was back. The further I run the worse the pain got. At 6 miles I stopped and hit the YMCA for some resistance training.

So what could this be?? I will try one more run today in the new Nike’s but if I feel the pain again I will have to head back to the running store for more help. Maybe I should run the roads with my trail shoes. Would that be bad??

Maybe try some Asics Gels? They last longer than Nikes and offers great cushioning. My local running store is very enthusiastic about that particular brand ... especially for the road.

Maybe after running the ultra, your knees are a little tender and the concrete is inflaming them. I don't see anything wrong with running in your trail shoes on the road. Especially if you can figure out in two miles what the deal is. Give it a go!

my dad, an ultra runner, wears only his trail shoes on every surface. so i would say it would be okay if the shoes feel good.

I was thinking along the same lines as Wes, maybe since you just ran that ultra your knees might not be so keen on pounding the pavement. Actually, I didn't even know you ran on the road LOL I thought you did 99% of your runs in the woods hehe.

Those wavey shoes look plain scarey to me! I'd probably experiment with the trail shoes, but then I do about 1/10th your mileage.

Have you tried some knee support?

Robin - thanks for your visits & comments! I wish i could offer some advice on your knee issues ... that is one issue I have never had (knocking on wood as i type!). and since i haven't ventured onto the trails just yet, i got nuthin' to offer you on shoe front either! i got this though: i read your post about post-race blues & i get them in a big bad way - i don't do recovery very well & i have no patience -- as a result i have a tendency to go out to hard, too fast, too soon after a big event. (am currently paying the price for such stupidity) ... maybe your knees just need a little more rest before pounding the pavement again?

ps - thanks for the link. I'm in Louisville, Kentucky.

I agree. I think you should try running in your trail shoes. If you don't have pain, use them from now on or keep looking for a similar road shoe. If your knee still hurts on the roads with those shoes, you might be over-strideing on the roads and not on the trails. Most people shorten their stride on trails without even realizing it.

I guess it's a combination of everything. You have to find out what's best for your knee. Experiment a little bit (not too much). I wear the Asics Gel Kayano - they are super for me, since I do have issues running longer distances on the road.

And I agree with Chad..watch your stride. Smaller ones are easier on the body and won't exhaust you too much anyways.
