Training Plan

As many of you have read, I will be running my first 50 mile Ultra this fall. Somehow, without even knowing, a small group of dreamers were born and now we travel down a new adventure of life. Every weekend I hit the trails with these ladies and as we share our lives one laugh at a time our bond becomes stronger without any effort. It has been become a therapy somehow and I for one love it. How lucky can a person be to find true committed friends that you can count on no matter what?!

With a lot of reading and some consulting from other experienced distance runners we have come up with a plan. Example of each week:

Monday – off or light workout
Tuesday – short run
Wednesday – short run
Thursday – short run
Friday – off
Saturday – long run (trail)
Sunday – at least half the distance or more of long run

I will also incorporate upper and lower body resistance training 3 times a week with core work 4 times a week. A new addition I have made is the purchase of a Yoga cd. This cd is geared toward runners and cyclist. Having done this for a week now I am pleased to already see improvements on my ability to actually hold some of the poses.

On the food front – I am back to calorie counting. By this I mean that I am back to making sure I reach my calorie needs for each meal and snacks to make up my 5 to 6 meals daily. Also paying close attention to the fluid intake again. My true test is on the weekends so wish me luck. With the back to back longer runs I will have to make all of this work in order to sustain the energy I will need.

Lastly, I have expressed the possibility of canceling my current gym membership. Tomorrow my husband and I will tour another facility close by. If this works it will provide more flexible operating hours and group class options that will be benefit my needs.

On a final note I want to praise my husband for the awesome 5 mile run down town with me and two of our friends last night. We tackled hills and heat but in the end it was one of our better runs. Way to go SCOTT!!

Quote of the day:

“A lot of people run a race to see who's the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts."
Steve Prefontaine

Thank you all for following along with me on this adventure. This is living!!

Hi Robin,

it is so much fun following your dreams and goals as they are very similar to mine! So THANK YOU for sharing.

You have a lot of will-power and with your plan you can only succeed!

That plan looks tough, but you are a tough girl so it should be a lot of fun for you. I can't imagine the endurance of spirit it will take, though. Awesome!

Hopefully we can go get some wings again soon. Or even some Mellow Mushroom. Yum! I'll give you guys a call tomorrow after the race.

Robin, you ROCK girl! That is just such an awesome post. Why does it seem so easy for us in this community to bond amongst ourselves like this. Maybe because we know that what we do is good hard clean work and fun. Who knows?

I'm kinda lookin forward to the winter this year. As I train for my first marathon, I wanna try some of that "yoga" stuff. It has fewer calories than ice cream, right? ;-)

The plan looks good!!! That's so awesome that you have a great group of friends to run with ;D ;D

Wait, wait, wait . . . calorie counting to make sure you have enough cals? Dang, I don't think I'll ever see that day ROFLMAO! It's always me trying to shed some extra cals.

YAY Scott!!! I wouldn't want to run with her, too fast for me. hehe

I love that Prefontaine quote.

Sounds like you have a really good plan, from training, to flexability to nutrition. Having the right plan is half the battle, so good job!
