Sports Medicine Specialist

Long story  very SHORT.....

Friday night Scott and I spent our night at a Sports Medicine Specialist office.  Not what I was hoping for a "date night" but pretty funny now that I think about it.  The staff made a lot of jokes as we were x rayed together and then placed in the same room for our consultation.  Scott was seen for his nasty sprain from last weekends race(now confirmed to be a high ankle sprain) and me for my left knee.  I finally reached the last stage of denial and now am ready to admit I have IT BAND ISSUES.  Admitting that does not make me feel better but it is in deed the truth.

So I will pretty much will continue to do what I have been doing.  Icing, stretching and running what I can.  I managed 5 miles today and the pain remained between the 5 to 6 level range.  This evening I was dying to add some miles to that and after a few steps the pain was an instant 8 to 9 level range.  I stopped.  Tomorrow I will see how my insurance will cover the PT I was recommended.  Not holding out high hopes on great coverage there but I will see.

I am still very thankful at what I was able to run today.  It was amazingly beautiful outside and I felt truly blessed with each step.

This is all temporary.... that I do know!

oh boy. damn IT band. mine is still talking smack on the runs and so i'm becoming requainted with my bike. this issue requires much patience - you may be well ahead of me in this game of patience with your stellar attitude, claming tea & yoga classes! everyone tells me - stretch, stretch & then stretch more.

High ankle sprain? Ouch...those are no fun at all.

I hope you can find the right combination of things so you don't have to keep going through this. Tough it out. I'm sure you will get it figured out.

Date night...I have a vauge recollection...

Together we can overcome...time to start dancing on those pedals! Have you got a "The Stick" it's pretty good as well but better if someone does if for you; harder.

I am looking on Active.com for some three legged races bu thave come up with nothing at the moment, maybe a unicycle ride?

ITB issue really suck. They hurt and take a while to get through; but you're tough and through with the guessing game. You'll be better in no time and ready to start kicking some serious butt.

Hope Soctt recovers quickly from the sprain.

I hope you can get some PT! I know it really helped me through a couple of injuries! Keep icing and resting and hopefully it will be better soon!

There is a simple solution to leg injuries in long distance runners........STOP! Swimmers and bikers have less injuries than runners. That said, I acknowledge I prefer both of those to running, even though a fair runner too. You just potentially damage the body less,,especially long term. I shall incur the wrath of all the myopic runners here, no doubt. BUT it is fact.

However, modern surgery can do a lot. As can alternate options....keep it up.

On the abs....soem improvement noted, but hardly spectacular!

Sorry to hear about Scott's sprain & your IT band issues but you have the right attitude about not taking ANY running that you do for granted.

Robin, ahhh.. the luck. Man, I know you gotta be tired of this back and forth. But, you are determined and strong in this, and this will pass soon. You keep doing what you're doing, because you are making all the right decisions.

Knee problems can be emotionally devistating. I hope you will have a speedy recovery and if you find a way to heal quickly, please write about it, I'm all ears. Personally, I'm into week six of runner's knee recovery and I feel like I'm about halfway there. My 62 y.o mother had some "soft tissue tears" in her knee last summer and it took five months to fully recover and she hasn't been injured since. I don't think you have to stop running forever.
