Avoiding the BONK

Another week of plugging away at miles of running. This one will top off at 56 miles following tomorrows 26 miles and Sunday’s 6 mile recovery run. Still have three more peak weeks until I enter the beginning of a taper period leading to MMTR.

So tomorrow I will build off this challenge of fueling my body better and getting the needed calories in.

Tools:
Water (60 oz.)
Cytomax (40 oz.)
Honey Stinger Gels (will take 1 every half hour)
Luna Bars (2)
Boiled Potatoes (4 small red potatoes with skin)
S-caps
Stinger Energy Chews (1 pack)

I have mapped out 5 and 3 mile loops and will use my car as an aid station.

On another note….

My son (aka Coach Morgan) has joined me in a weight routine that we have now been doing together twice a week for 8 weeks. In the past, weight routines of any kind have always made my legs feel heavy and fatigued during runs. After doing this routine for several weeks I have begun to notice that my body is adapting to this workout and I feel stronger for them. Sometimes my legs feel heavy but more times than not they feel good. On Monday we are going to change the routine and tackle a new weight training plan for our next 8 weeks. Mostly I have enjoyed doing this with my youngest but I will also say that he is tuff on me and cuts me no slack. What a great Coach!

Wow, what a long run. I hope the fuel works well. I've never heard of having potatoes on a long run. V. interesting -- it makes sense since they are so easy to digest.

Have fun!

I think you are making a wise decision to do weights. With age comes wisdom...and a loss of muscle and connective tissue. Lifting always makes my legs more tired for training, but if you stop lifting for a week or two before big events, your legs should have a renewed energy. It's one of those things where it seems to be slowing me down (training) when in reality, it's making me faster (racing).

Sounds like you are on track for a great event if you can get that nutrition thing figured out. And if you do...please call me and give me the secret ;-)

I think it is so cool that you have an activity that you and your son both enjoy. I also think it is cute that he cuts you no slack.

to avoid the bonk, water is essential. Di hydrogen monoxide, by another name. But have a laugh at www.dhmo.org
