A Thousand Needles

We have this chalk board painted on a section of our wall in the kitchen. Notes, dates, and list of things that are going on in our family. When our son needed some recent items this is how he listed them….

(Shampoo, tooth paste, apple juice)

On Tuesday I set out for my run. A quick check of the temps and I made the decision to run in shorts. Crazy but I did. As I started running I remember thinking that maybe I should go back in and change but I didn’t. My thought was that I would warm up. This never happened.

Mile 1 – Sure wish I had my knit hat on. Ears are a little cold.

Mile 2 – Just saw a glimpse of me running in a shadow. Looks like I am jogging so I try and pick up the pace a bit until I get slammed by WIND GUST.

Mile 3 – Slow pace back down. I think my quads are frozen. I am FREEZING MY BUTT OFF.

Mile 4 – Want to walk but resist the temptation. Thoughts of a hot shower pull me to the home stretch.

I walk in the house and take a quick look at the clock to note my time. It only take seconds for the feeling of a thousand needles in my legs to come over me. They are red and even though I had gloves on Scott tries to warm my hands up. I sit down in front of the computer hoping for the pace calculator to spit out some decent results. This did not happen. The information posted something like…

STUPID PERSON. PUT ON MORE CLOTHES AND PROTECT THOSE LEGS.

Temps were 34 degrees with a 26 degree wind chill factor.

Holding out hope that the Winter League Ride will take place this weekend. I need to be on the road!!

Below the mid-40s usually indicates my switch from shorts to pants/etc. I'm truly scared about 14 miles in sub-20 degree weather this weekend in Atlanta.

Where's Spring!?

Yeah, I always over dress and sounds like you should start! When my muscles refuse to warm up, it is a real mental block for me. It seems that I use this for an excuse more than anything when running in the winter. Great work not walking!

I can ride in tights into the high 60's, but legs just don't work, and ache when cold.

With lots of core I can get by with LS jersey and loose wind vest into high 30's, but have to keep the legs warm. Oh, love my TurttleFur balaclava. Makes a HUGE difference.

Weirdly, I've noticed my liver area is like a block of ice when I ride in the cold. Guess when it gets cold the body lets bodyfat freeze. LOL

Be careful out there! I believe the pins and needles sensation is a precursor to frostbite.

Ya, I can see why your legs were a bit cold. At least now you know for next time:)

Well, unless I'm racing, I'm not usually even running outdoors if temps are below 40. Kudos for even getting out there!!
