SMOKED

Hanging with the Kids

This past weekend we had the joy of visiting with our oldest son and his wife at the Marine base they are currently assigned at. While there Kenny and I would also knocked out our long run together leading up to the Half Marathon we will be doing on his base in four weeks.

Kenny and me before our run

First loop – 3.5 miles - 32:54 – 9:24 avg pace (first mile was an 8:12 pace)

With a quick stop to hydrate I told him to go solo on the second lap. I would be maintaining or slowing my pace down. He made some reference to waking him up when I finished and off we went. LOL! Although my legs were a bit heavy I managed to keep him in sight the entire second loop. It was a push at times but I held on.

Second loop – 3.5 miles – 31.25 – 8:59 avg

So with the run finished I determined that my oldest son pretty much will be smoking his mom in four weeks. I guess he will be my rabbit I will be chasing down. Don’t you just love being young and fast?!

Before leaving out of town on Friday I had the task of putting my goals in writing and then awaiting my weeks training plan. I must admit I felt that they were pretty lame and not well defined. After some thought and discussion with Scott (12 hours of driving in the car gives you too much time to think) I revamped my initial goals and sent them off to coach this morning. My goals are much more defined on somewhat take me out of my comfort zone to push me! My family will come first and the time I do put into training will be more goal focused and intense but for shorter periods. I am going to take full advantage of having a coach and trust in this whole process. I want this experience to be an exciting time in my life but not take over my life. Balance is always the key to this.

So now I await the outcome.

Sounds like a great weekend, and congrats on putting those goals onto paper.

I just can't imagine how proud you must be of your son. If born too late to wield a Samurai sword, or stand with the Spartans at Thermopylae, you just can't do any better than the Corps.

I was hugely impressed that the local Afghans in Helmand don't want to work for the Marines because the Marines are living such a Spartan lifestyle even they can't hang with them. If you want to be hard, don't live a soft life!

Love Dave and Wes' comments, but either way, you are both already winners.

Trusting the process should be hugely liberating, and a wise move imho. I have likely 'helped' too much already, but hope my remarks were reinforced by your recent intro to Criterion racing. ;-)

Whatever you decide, I'll be cheering you on!

I remember being scared to work with a coach at first because I thought he/she would be putting a lot of demands on my time, etc. Turns out to be almost the opposite because I was always trying to do too much. Be honest with your coach about your priorities, time and goals and I'm sure it's going to work out GREAT!!
