42.4 Wheels for Meals

First I will say that a cycle event is NOTHING like a running event. Scott and I arrived about 15 minutes before the event. We talked with a few other cyclist, lined up with about 200 riders, and off we went. For the first few miles we had the luxury of blocked off roads and it was easy to know where the route was. Then it changed. The markings were spayed on the roads and during the next 10 miles it was rather easy to miss a turn if you where not paying full attention. Several riders made this mistake. Scott and I were lucky that we did not.

Let me just say that in a nutshell the hills where killers with little relief of short flats and then back to the climbing. Now I love climbing but after about the 33 mile point I wanted some true flats. As I rode into the finish line area there was no music, no announcements, and no one taking down numbers or times. I found this odd but again this was my first riding event so maybe this is the norm.

Ride: 42.4 miles / Time 2:48 / average 15.1 pace / 31.2 max pace

I loved it and felt great. I had expected to feel trashed but instead I felt good with no soreness the following day. SWEET!!!

This week we begin a membership at a new facility that offers a pool. Yes, Marcy-JavaMom-and Wes I may just be thinking of doing a Tri. I am a trail runner at heart but why not do all that you love. So stay tuned for some ideas I will be tossing around. My training for my big fall 50 mile trail will begin in June some time but I feel that biking and swimming will be included in a quest towards a big goal I am considering for next year. Time will tell.......

High fiving Wes and Marcy!! We did it kids.

Oh wait, why is marcy recruiting for Tri when she isn't swimming yet? Hmmmm....

That is awesome that you are going to go for it!! You know that is exactly my story...was running and got injured so I needed a CT outlet..that led to biking and you see the nuttiness of my tri life today, right?

i love this - you can be a trail runner at heart & still try other things!

i too, keep comparing biking & biking events to running ... for me personally - because running was always solitary (i trained alone & for the most part except for my coach, ran most races alone) .. i am loving the comraderie of being on a team and having teammates - planning races according to what your teammates are doing etc ...

its a different perspective on things, but one that i am fiding to be a total breath of fresh air!

lord girl - i know of some bike races in tennesee - isn't that halfway between us? what are you doing mothers day weekend? wink wink. (highland rim classic in mcminnville, tn is on my list of maybe's). nothing like a 55 mile road race to get to know each other!

Great job!! It's nice to hear how a cycling race/event is...I've never done one either, but am planning to try one in June.

Congrats on adding biking and swimming to your trail running :)

Wow, you are turning into a real biker!

Biking and swimming counts for your 50 mile race equally to running. training is training and a stronger body will get through to the finish line.

Happy training!!!

Sounds like it was a lot of (challenging) fun! I know what you mean, but the difference is this was a cycling event, and you are used to running races. I would bet more than a couple of folks never even came back to the finish, and just went home. Don't know if there are any running "events", but think 5K walk for charity, where nobody "wins", but everybody wins. Or something.

Frustrating, right? EVERYTHING is a race! LOL

Congratulation Robin. It sounds like a great ride. Not to mention that you guys were able to do it together. to me, that's a huge win over and above any other kind of finish line "hooplah".

I haven't ever entered a biking only race but it seems too bad that the course support was not what we are used ot in running and tri's.

You Sooooooooooo need to being doing Tri's. I know that you would rock it out.

Oh, no...say it ain't so. Another runner lost to the dark side. ;-)

Just don't start thinking that bike shorts are fashionable. Have fun and stay safe.

ah......the pool. Chasing a black line at the end of a day is cathartic. The languid flow of water is soothing yet energising. And better for the body. BUT....hard to lose weight swim training, unless a very heavy duty training regime. Here, swim training is used a lot by rugby teams as a rejuvenating training session after a game. So think if that....even the big boys use swimming! But, I come from a strong swim background, so really do enjoy it.
