Yoga and Running

What a fantastic week of training. Fell short of fueling properly but I know what needs to be done in that area. I did reintroduce sugar back into my diet in very low amounts this past week. Funny how your body can adjust to things you thought were impossible. I was not perfect over my two week purge but I made huge changes and I can tell the benefits already.

This week’s goals were to incorporate Yoga twice and I am proud to report that I made this happen. Class on Monday was hard and I was sweating far more than I have doing a cd at home. Infact the instructor corrected my form several times and by doing so I felt as if I had a much more effective workout. The following day my abs were even sore so I knew I was on the right track. Last night I took another class and really concentrated on form and breathing. I found it challenge yet relaxing. Should see huge changes in the flexibility department. Something every runner needs. Can’t wait until next week’s class.

Workouts for the week (so far):

Monday – Upper weights / 30 minutes on stair master (my son talked me into this exercise) / Yoga
Tuesday – 3 miles of hills / Lower weights / 30 minute cycle class
Wednesday – 4 mile run / Yoga
Thursday – 3 miles / total body weights

On Saturday I will hit the trails. Only 9 weeks till our first 50k in the Lynchburg series. Getting excited already!!

WHOOOOAAAAA Momma!!! 9 weeks?!?! That baby is coming up REAL soon!

I've been wondering how the sugar free diet has been going. I'm glad that you can see the benefits, now if I could only follow suit (in at least cutting back LOL)

Mmmm, yogurt. Wait...what? You spell it funny.

I really need to pick out a handfull of pilates or yoga positions I can do while watching TV or whatever at night, and actually do them several nights a week. Some core strength would definately help, as it would for anyone.

So, what was the first treat when you fell off the wagon? Good ol' fashioned Southern tea? Good for you on getting hold of the diet. And I need to remember to make a copy of that Bicycling magazine article for you.

Great job getting the yoga stuff in. Always a hard thing to do sometimes..

Cool, 9 weeks till the first ultra.. I do hear the trails calling you..

I really don't think there is a better cross-training exercise for runners than yoga. No only helps it increase flexibility (especially the notoriously tight hamstrings for runners), but it's a great workout for the "core" as well. Enjoy and keep it up!

9 weeks? Wow! That's barely enough time for me to train for a 5K :-)

i used to do yoga all the time ... and when i had to go to PT for my hip, they were so surprised by how flexible i was - for a runner, they said. its' been ages, and i can totally tell the difference. i should get back into it too ... just don't know where to squeeze it into schedule! good for you for finding the time.

I do like Yoga but just don't do it much, especially as much as I need to. I like Pilates too, and plan on doing that this week. I need more core work.
